Tara Heinrichs, fourth-grade student at Hillsboro Elementary School, was the winner of the citizenship class T-shirt contest, sponsored by the Hillsboro American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion.

About 52 students gathered in the school gymnasium May 16 to learn the name of the winner, play games and eat ice cream.

“For the last five years, we’ve been going into the fourth-grade classes once a month and teaching them about American citizenship,” said Sue Klassen, auxiliary member.

“Today, we’re having our end-of-the-season party.”

Also joining Klassen in the festivities were fellow members Sue Wadkins and Jeri Klose.

Students drew patriotic designs on 8-inch by 10-inch pieces of paper in red, blue and black colors. Their designs were judged by the eighth-grade social-studies class at Hillsboro Middle School.

Thirteen finalists were narrowed down to three, assigned point values, and the final winner, Tara, had the most points, said Klassen.

Each fourth-grader received a T-shirt emblazoned with Tara’s “United We Stand” design.

The shirts were purchased by the Sons of the American Legion.
