Near misses were the theme of the day for Goessel at the Class 1-2A regional golf tournament at Pretty Prairie May 6.
Only five strokes kept the team from qualifying for the state tournament, but an impressive back nine from two Bluebirds ensured that Goessel would be represented.
Ben Schmidt and Zac Church had duplicate scores of 86, which gave them the last individual spot for the state tournament, which was to be held Monday at Turkey Creek at McPherson.
“Ben and Zac really turned their scores around with solid play on the back nine,” coach Troy Kemling said. “Zac finally put together two good nines and finished in the top tier. Ben has played well at times this year, but had been lacking confidence lately. It is good to see them both come through when it counts.”
Goessel’s hottest golfer for most of the season, Jeremy Miller, finished with an 89.
“Jeremy has led the team all season, but couldn’t buy a putt and finished two strokes out of contention,” Kemling said.
The other Goessel golfers finished their season at regionals, too. Kelcy Voth came away with a 99, Kent Peters a 101, and Tyler Huntley a 113.
