Goessel to send 10 athletes to state track meet

The Goessel track team qualified 10 athletes for for state competition at the Class 1A Regional at Burlington Friday.

The team will be sending seven girls and three boys to Wichita this weekend.

The Bluebirds will be participating in five boys’ events and five girls’ events. The boys scored 40 points for a top-five finish out of 28 schools competing.

“It was a terrific day for the handful of kids we brought to regionals,” coach Brian Stucky said.

Goessel’s first-place finishes were Melinda Stucky in high jump with a leap of 5-1, Ben Goering in pole vault by clearing 12-6, and Jeremy Voth in high hurdles with a time of 16.1 seconds.

Second places went to Daniel Silbereisen in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:45, and Voth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.4.

The girls’ 4×100 relay team of Lindsey Unruh, Ashley Soyez, Katie Schroeder and Candice Bailey qualified by finish third.

Finishing fourth for Goessel were Silbereisen in the 3,200 meters, Unruh in the 400-meters dash, Schroeder in the 300-meter hurdles, and the girls’ 4×400 relay of Schroeder, Darla Funk, Soyez and Unruh.

Goessel will compete at Friday’s preliminaries, which begin at 3:20 p.m. and last through the evening.

Their events Saturday begin with pole vault at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the day.
