HHS golf team places sixth at MCAA meet

The Hillsboro High School golf team placed sixth among seven teams at the MCAA league tournament Monday at the Lyons Town Country Club.

The Trojans finished with a four-man total of 359, which left them 74 strokes behind the championship team from Wichita Collegiate. The Spartans’ nearest competitor was Hesston, which finished 17 strokes behind.

Ryan Fields led the Trojans with an 82, which tied him for 13th on the individual medalist list. Freshman Lance Bartel contributed an 87 (18th), Billy Winegarner a 94 (24th), and Randy Klassen a 96 (26th).

Jordan Allen shot an even 100 and Michael Fisher a 117.

“The fact that we had two players break 90 indicates some progress for us,” coach Scott O’Hare said.

The Trojans struggled Thursday at the Cheney Invitational Tournament. Fields, the Trojans’ top performer, did not compete because of a music trip to Colorado and Winegarner, the No. 2 man, was hampered with a swollen hand.

Klassen and Bartel tied for team low-score honors by shooting 99s. Winegarner followed with a 109 and Fisher a 130, giving the Trojans a four-man score of 437, which placed them at the bottom of the 11-team tournament.

Independence won the event with a team score of 305.

Three Trojan golfers participated in the Hillsboro Junior Varsity Tournament April 26. Fisher shot a 54 over nine holes, Tyler Krich a 64 and Michael Roble a 70.

The Trojans will compete at regionals on Monday.
