Roberts impressed with first Spring Beef Show

Rickey Roberts, Marion County extension agent, hosted his first Marion County Spring Beef Show last month. It was his first county spring show, and he had three words to describe it.

“What a show,” he said.

Beef exhibitors from across the state met April 20 in Hillsboro, and 89 head of cattle were on display.

The Marion County Exhibitor Champion went to Kara Wasmiller of Lehigh, and the Reserve went to Alex Nuss of Hillsboro.

Top honors in the steer show went to Clay Scott of Caney and Reserve Grand Champion Steer was went to Drew Hedges of Burden.

The Supreme Champion Heifer was a commercial heifer shown by Kayleigh Laurer of Abilene. And the Reserve Supreme Champion was a shorthorn entry shown by Tyler Atwood of La Cygne.

Eddie Nichols from Wichita judged the following events:

Class 1 Angus steers: Jared Fish, Hillsboro, class winner and breed champion.

Chianina Steers: Kara Wasemiller, class winner and breed champion.

Class 1 Maine Anjou Steers: Leann Thomas, Marion, class winner and breed champion; Tracy Jost, Hillsboro, first red; and Lucas Hamm, Tampa, second red.

Class 1 Simmental Steers: Kara Wasemiller, class winner and breed champion; Brian Klenda, Lincolnville, third blue; Alfonse Klenda, Lincolnville, first red; and Jackie Klenda, Lincolnville, second red.

Class 2 Simmental Steers: Brian Klenda, first blue; Laura Klenda, Lincolnville, first red and second blue; and Jackie Klenda, third blue.

All Other Breeds Steers: Leann Thomas, class winner and breed champion, and Alex Nuss, third red.

Class 1 Crossbred Steers: Alex Nuss, third blue; Lucas Hamm, second red; Tracy Jost, third red; and Tyler Klenda, fourth red.

Class 2 Crossbred Steers: Ty Goossen, Hillsboro, first red and Jessica Vannocker, Hillsboro, third red.

Class 3 Crossbred Steers: Leann Thomas, first red.

Class 5 Angus Heifers: Caleb Barkman, Hillsboro, first blue.

Class 1 Shorthorn Heifers: Scott Nuss, first blue.

Class 1 Commercial Heifers: Alex Nuss, first blue.

Class 2 Commercial Heifers: Scott Nuss, first blue and Daniel Goentzel, Marion, first red.

Class 4 AOB Heifers: Chris Will, Lost Springs, first blue.

In the showmanship contest Leann Thomas was Reserve Champion in the senior division; Ty Goossen was Champion in the intermediate division and Grand Champion Showman; and Amanda Hopper of Leonardville was Reserve Grand Champion.

“To host something of this magnitude requires a tremendous amount of work,” Roberts said.

“I want to give a special thanks to the countless volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that this show remains a first-class event.”
