Depression Glass show & tell Sunday

Donavon Schmidt of Newton will conduct a show and tell of his Depression Glass collecting experiences at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 5, at the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel.

Collectors are invited to bring their Depression Glass for personal consultation after the program at the Prep School.

Refreshments will be served. The regular admission price will apply for non-members. There is no charge for museum members.

Regier to give senior voice recital

Carlin Regier will give her senior voice recital at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 4, in the Chapel-Auditorium at Tabor College.

She is the daughter of Dale and Teresa Regier of Hillsboro.

Regier will present selections from Handel, Faure, Debussy, Szulc, Rorem, Gilbert and Sullivan, Puccini and Schubert.

HHS FFA Chapter banquet May 6

Members of the Hillsboro High School FFA Chapter will hold their Parent/Member/Employer Banquet and Awards program at 7 p.m., Monday, May 6, in the HHS auditorium.

The event will recognize and show appreciation to parents and employers; honor special members who have excelled during the past year; give special recognition to supporters; recall the FFA highlights of the 2001-02 year; install 2002-03 chapter officers; and provide a springboard for the 2002-03 Hillsboro FFA chapter agenda.

A reception and light meal will follow the awards ceremony and officer installations. The meal will include a choice of turkey and ham sandwiches fruit and vegetable platters, desserts and drinks.

The public and guests are invited.

Veteran’s service rep scheduled in May

Veteran’s service representative Richard Haywood will be scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., May 7 and May 21, at the Marion Health Department.

Any veterans, their dependents or survivors, who have received an eligibility verification report form or any inquiry from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, should contact Haywood for assistance.

Kimberly A. Kysar to receive master’s

Kimberly A. Kysar will graduate with a master of science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Oklahoma College of Allied Health at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 10, at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

Kysar is the daughter of Norman and Gloria Winter of Hillsboro.

Fifth-grade musical at HHS Friday

The fifth graders at Hillsboro Elementary School will present the musical “I Need a Vacation” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 3, at the high school auditorium.

The musical will be directed by vocal music teacher Shirley Baltzer.

The public is invited.

Doug & Mona Wedel to speak Sunday

Doug and Mona Wedel, missionaries from Montreal, Quebec, will be the featured speakers Sunday, May 5, at Central Heights Mennonite Church in rural Durham.

Doug Wedel will speak at 10:45 a.m. Following a meal, the couple will speak at 1:15 p.m. about their missionary work.

The public is welcome at any or all services.

Ebenfeld MB Church to host musical fete

Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church will host a request program at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 5, at the church.

The vocal program will feature a ladies trio, mixed ensemble and vocal duets. Instrumental music will include solos, the junior high ensemble, and a piano and organ duet.

Chris Scott will give the devotional.

CIS vision-program coupons available

Community in Schools of Marion County, a participant in the Sight for Students vision program, has a limited number of coupons available for free vision exams and eye glasses for children who qualify.

Eligibility requirements to qualify are as follows:

age 18 or younger;

has not received high school graduation diploma;

is not enrolled in Medicaid or other vision insurance;

family income is no more than 200 percent of poverty level ($36,200 for family of four);

must be a U.S. citizen with a social security number;

has not used Sight for Students program within the last 12 months.

Asbestos concern for U.S. Navy veterans

U.S. Navy veterans who served aboard ship from the 1950s to the 1970s and are having lung or breathing problems are asked to contact the Kansas Commission of Veterans’ Affairs because they may have been exposed to asbestos.

A new type of cancer of the lungs due to asbestos exposure-called medothelioma-is being investigated, according to the commission.

Holy Family Parish to honor graduates

Holy Family Parish high school graduating seniors will be honored during the 10:30 a.m. Mass, Sunday, May 19, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen.

Parish graduating seniors will be receiving personal invitations.

Sampler festival to be held May 4 & 5

The Kansas Sampler Festival will be held May 4 and May 5 at Riverside Park in Independence.

The event is designed to promote what there is to see and do in more than 130 Kansas communities, including Hillsboro.

Lions Eye Clinic holds successful screening

The Lions Eye Clinic held a Free Eye Vision Screening April 27.

Ophthalmologist Esther Rettig and her staff screened 140 children and adults in Marion County.

“It was well worth providing this screening for the public,” Rettig said.

Those who attended were eligible for a drawing for $50 bank bonds or certificates. Banks contributing to the drawing were Tampa State Bank and Central National Bank, both of Marion, and Hillsboro State Bank.

Refreshments were provided by the eye clinic.

LWML convention held April 26-28

The Kansas District Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Convention hosted by the Northwest Zone LWML was held April 26 to April 28 at Colby Community Center.

The theme of the convention was “Be Still and Know That I am God.” Included among the 414 members and guests attending from across the state were Marilyn Riemer, Lois Nuss, Betty Bernhardt and Elizabeth Ryding.

Outstanding women educators meet

Members of the Alpha Omega Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International honor society of outstanding women educators attended the annual Phi State Convention April 19 to April 21, at the Ramada Inn in Hutchinson.

Area members attending were Polly Giebler, Sonja Koslowsky, Mary Regier, Donna Bagley, Anita Boese, Celia Gross, Mildred Lamborn-Karnowski, Helen Reznicek, Mary Olsen, Pauline Holub and Rowena Olsen.

The event theme was “Changing for the Future.” Following an executive board meeting, members attended workshops.

Dolly Price, member of the international membership committee, was the keynote speaker at the presidents’ and founders’ banquet Saturday evening.
