EDITORIAL: Two for two

The site council and parents at Hillsboro Elementary School should be commended for the successful carnival they held Saturday evening at the high school gymnasium. This was the second straight year they’ve pulled off a winner. The $3,000 raised by the carnival will go toward various educational resources the school has not included in its budget. In addition to raising money, the event seemed to raise a positive spirit among the children and adults who participated.

The very next day, the Hillsboro High School Trojan Booster Club sponsored the KU Barnstormers as a fund-raiser to support Trojan athletics. Maybe the third time is the charm, or maybe Jeff Boschee is a crowd magnet, but this was the most successful event in three attempts.

Given the budget constraints in Topeka, we wonder if these kinds of parent-initiated fund-raisers might not be the wave of the future for funding more and more school-related causes. Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. Anyone for a bake sale? -DR
