HMS track team sets seven records at Marion

Thanks to some unique circumstances, the Hillsboro Middle School track team set seven school records Thursday in their opening meet at Marion.

Nine teams participated in the event, which was held at Marion because the track at Tabor College in Hillsboro is needing repairs.

Four of the school records came in the triple jump, which is a new event for middle-school athletes.

Kyle Kroeker set the initial mark for eighth-grade boys at 30 feet 51/2 inches; Laura Neufeld set the mark for eighth-grade girls at 21-11/2; Tyler Kaufman is the first record-holder for seventh-grade boys with a leap of 32-10, which placed second at the meet; and Lauryn Mayfield set the first record for seventh-grade girls at 23-9, which placed her fifth in the field.

Two of the new records were set in girls’ shot put, thanks in part to the first use of a lighter, six-pound shot. Tiffany Knaak set a new mark for eighth-grade girls and Janet Glahn set the new seventh-grade mark at 22-5, which was good for sixth-place

The seventh new record was in seventh-grade girls’ pole vault. Kelsie Penner, the first HMS athlete to compete in that event, cleared 5-6 and placed second.

As a team, the HMS eighth-grade boys placed third. David Funk recorded the only first-place finish for the Trojans with a time of 12.41 in the 75-meter hurdles. He edged teammates Derek Schneider and Tim Funk, who finished second and third.

The eighth-grade girls, despite the two school records, failed to score as a team.

The seventh-grade girls, with firsts in three events, placed third as a team. Jessica Heidel won the long jump, JuliAnne Chisholm placed first in 75-meter hurdles and Chisholm, Heidel, Megan Peachey and Sydney Waner broke the tape in the 4×400 relay.

“I felt the kids competed extremely well, and now we have established times and distances for each competitor to improve throughout the season,” said coach Dennis Boldt.

“I appreciate Marion hosting the meet,” he added. “They have a beautiful facility and did a great job running off the events. We hope to have our track repaired for next week.”

The nine teams participating were Hillsboro, Marion, Peabody, Centre, Hesston, Abilene, Herington, Berean and Halstead.
