Warrior baseball led by lone senior

When the Marion baseball team throws out the first pitch of the 2002 season, they will be doing it with only one senior and a boat load of young talent.

Robert Verbic is the only senior on the Warrior baseball team and is among eight Marion players who lettered last season.

The Warriors will be looking to improve on last season’s 8-13 record.

Marion coach Sean Spoontz, in his third year, said he thinks his team will be competitive in post-season play despite a rigorous schedule against league and non-league opponents.

“We have a tough schedule. The only thing that might keep us from doing well is our schedule,” Spoontz said. “Most of the teams we face all had good records last season. The competition we face is going to be tough, but it’s going to prepare us for regionals. Our chances are very good to go to state this year.”

Verbic anchors the Marion team as a four-year starter. Spoontz said Verbic will likely be used as a pitcher and a second baseman this season.

“He’s more of a quiet leader,” Spoontz said of Verbic. “He just gets it done on the field. He’s an exceptional hitter and his fielding has improved so much from last year.”

Spoontz feels junior Mitch Enos will help his team, too.

“He’s the kind of kid who will do anything for Marion,” Spoontz said. “Mitch is our hustle kid, and he’s going to get some kids fired up.”

The Warriors open the season at home Thursday against Hillsboro. The doubleheader begins at 4:30 p.m.
