Bluebirds lose to Rams but move into sub-state

The Goessel boys’ basketball team fell to St. Xavier on Saturday 65-63 in the championship game of the Class 1A Regionals held in Junction City.

The Bluebirds and Rams battled back and forth throughout the game.

Goessel’s Jesse Goertzen hit two free throws down the stretch to tie the game at 52.

At the end of regulation, the score remained tied, this time at 56.

In the overtime period, St. Xavier jumped out to a five-point lead, but Goessel again tied the ball game with less than two minutes remaining. The Rams added two more points and took the regional crown.

Jeremy Voth led the Bluebirds with 22 points.

The boys will play in Clay Center against Centralia on Thursday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
