With the regular season coming to a close, area teams have their eyes on a possible state-tournament berth.
To get there, they’ll have to pass through sub-state play. Class 1A will precede sub-state play with a regional tournament.
Hillsboro and Marion will both be competing at Lyons. They will be joined by Hesston, Ellinwood and Lyons from the Mid-Central Activities Association, as well as Hoisington, Southeast of Saline and, in the boys’ division only, St. John’s Military of Salina.
The first-round game of sub-state will be played Monday (boys) or Tuesday (girls) on the home court of the higher-seeded teams. Pairings were going to be finalized after the Free Press went to press. Preliminary information indicates the Trojan boys and girls should both be a host team.
For those pairings, check the Web site (www.hillsborofreepress. com) or call the Free Line (947-3363). First-round games will begin at 7 p.m.
If the Trojan boys defeat Smoky Valley Friday night, they will have the best record among the eight teams at 17-3.
The other teams with winning records-Hoisington (14-5), Marion (12-6), Hesston (12-7)-will also be host teams.
The girls’ tournament is unique in that none of the teams, as of Friday, had losing records.
Through Friday, Hesston would be the top seed at 16-3, followed by Hillsboro 15-4, Southeast of Saline at 14-4, and Hoisington at 13-5.
Peabody-Burns and Canton-Galva will both play in their sub-state tournament at Cottonwood Falls following the first round of games. They will be joined by Chase County, Berean Academy, Herington, Moundridge, Olpe and Sacred Heart.
As in 3A, the first round of the tournament will be played on the home court of the higher-seeded teams.
At 12-8, the Peabody-Burns boys are in the running for an opening game at home. Canton-Galva boys will play on the road.
On the girls’ side, Peabody-Burns and Canton-Galva will both open play on the road.
Goessel and Centre joined other Class 1A schools with first-round regional play on Monday for the boys’ teams and Tuesday for the girls’ teams.
Centre boys played host to White City on Monday while the girls traveled to St. Xavier on Tuesday.
