Kyle Kroeker’s layup as time ran out gave the Hillsboro Middle School third place at the MCAA league tournament Saturday in Lindsborg with a 38-36 win over the host team.
With the score tied and about eight seconds left on the clock, the Trojans’ Macy Fadenrecht stole the ball and passed it ahead to Kroeker, who drove in for the score.
Tim Funk led his teammates in scoring with 16 points. Kroeker and Chad Hughbanks finished with eight apiece, Adam Scheele scored four and Fadenrecht two.
HMS lost a close game against Wichita Collegiate in the tournament semifinals, 33-28. Fadenrecht scored eight points for the Trojans, Funk six, Kroeker and Hughbanks five each, and Scheele four.
The Trojans defeated Haven in the opening round, 35-30. Scheele and Hughbanks each scored eight points and Kroeker seven to pace the Trojans.
Also scoring were Funk with six points, Wade Wiebert four, and Fadenrecht two.
The Trojans finished the season with a 12-2 mark.
“It was a real privilege to be a part of this team,” said coach Shawn Winter. “The coaches believed in the players, the players believed in their coaches and their teammates. They worked hard, listened and displayed a lot of character on and off the court.”
