Three candidates file for city council vacancies

Three local men have filed for opening on the Hillsboro City Council. The filing deadline ended Tuesday, Jan. 22.


Two candidates will square off in the West Ward. They are Daren Arndt of 213 N. Main and Shelby Dirks of 612 S. Ash. They will vie for the seat currently occupied by Wendell Dirks, who chose not to seek reelection.


In the East Ward, Byron McCarty of 212 S. Madison has filed for the seat current occupied by Mike Padgett, who also declined to seek another term.


The election will be held April 2. Should more than two people file for a position, a primary election would be held Feb.26.


Those who cannot vote on April 2 can cast an advance ballot between March 20 and the day of the election. Applications for an advance ballot can be picked up at the Marion County Courthouse or by calling the county;s clerk office at 620-382-2185. Those ballots must be cast in person or by mail before 7 p.m. on election day.


Anyone who is not registered to vote must do so by March 18 if they want to participate in the April 2 election. If you have changed your residence or your name since the last time they voted must register again. If you will turn 18 between March 19 and election day and would like to vote, you should register now.
