Kleinsasser feted for officiating

Joseph Kleinsasser, Hillsboro, was awarded a certificate as the “National Federation of Officials Association Girls’ Basketball Official of the Year” for 2001 in Kansas Jan. 21 in Hutchinson.

Each year the NFOA picks two officials from each state as recommended by supervisors in the state, and designates one for boys’ games and one for girls’.

Kleinsasser, in his 28th season as an official, has worked all-star games for the Kansas Association of Basketball Coaches the past four years and has been selected by coaches to officiate some 15 state tournaments.

Kleinsasser said he appreciated receiving the award.

“Officials aren’t thanked or credited very often-and you don’t expect to be,” he said. “You do it because you enjoy the game and you want support the kids who play.”
