HHS girls fall hard in SES semifinals

Salina South was too good of a team for Hillsboro to play poorly against and still come back and beat. The Trojans never seemed to find their game Thursday night at the Southeast of Saline Girls Invitational and lost to the Cougars, 45-28.

The Trojans trailed after one quarter, 12-4, and then 26-15 at intermission. The Cougars got 12 of their points from behind the 3-point line as the Trojans were slow in getting on the Cougars’ hot-shooting guards.

In the third quarter, the Trojans picked up the intensity and inched to within 10 points by quarter’s end, 37-27. But in the final period, Hillsboro missed all 13 of its shots from the field and Salina South extended its lead to 17 by game’s end.

Shannon Kroeker had 10 points to lead Hillsboro, but got little offensive support from her teammates. Unofficially, the Trojans were 12-of-44 (27.3 percent) from the field for the game.

With the loss, the Trojans drop to 10-2 for the season and will play Junction City for third place on Friday night. The Blue Jays lost to the home team in the other semifinal matchup. Game time will be 6:30 p.m.
