Warriors beat by Burrton in 1st round game

The Marion girls’ basketball team was uprooted by Burrton Monday night, 61-49, at the Eli J. Walter Girls’ Invitational Basketball Tournament.


The Warriors and Chargers battled back and forth in the first two quarters before Burrton came away with a 32-24 advantage at intermission.


Marion came out in the third quarter and outscored the the Chargers 15-12 for a shot at a late-game rally.


But Burrton stayed tough defensively and outscored the Warriors 16-10 in the final quarter toclaim the win.


Burrton sharp-shooter I. Wright exploded for 27 points against the Warrior defense.


Maggie Powers and Brandi Peterie led the Marion offensive attack with nine points each, followed by Krista Zogelman, who added seven.


With the loss, the Warriors move into the consolation side of the bracket and will challenge Berean Academy Thursday night at 5 p.m.


Burrton and Wichita Collegiate advanced to the second-round with their wins over Marion and Berean Academy, respectively.


If the Warriors beat Berean, they would have the opportunity to play for fifth place at the tournament at 4:30 p.m., Saturday.
