Barrie and Angela Tompkins are surrounded by their costume changes as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day program for Hillsboro middle and high school students Monday. The hour-long program, titled “Blacks in the West,” featured Angela as Stagecoach Mary, who tells about black women who were part of the West. Barrie entertained the audience with information about Buffalo Soldiers, outlaws, lawmen and cowboys. The couple is part of the Nicodemus group performing in schools, colleges and conferences statewide. The day’s events included several other presentations related to African-American history and issues.
