Trojan girls advance to SES semifinals

The Hillsboro girls got off to a slow start, but played on all cylinders in the second half to route Ellsworth, 55-12, in the first round of the Southeast of Saline Girls’ Basketball Tournament Monday afternoon.

Ellsworth scored the first bucket a little more than a minute into the game and Hillsboro didn’t match it until Shannon Kroeker scored with 2:03 left in the quarter. By quarter’s end, the Trojans were up 8-3 and then slowly expanded that lead to 18-8 by halftime.

But Hillsboro came out hard and hot in the third quarter to lead 37-12 by the time it ended. That was all the scoring Ellsworth would enjoy as the Trojans played shutout basketball for the last 13:45 of the second half. Meanwhile, the Trojans were shooting better than 70 percent from the field over the same two quarters.

Kroeker led Hillsboro with 12 points.

The Trojans will square off against Class 5A Salina South in Thursday’s semifinal matchup. The game will be a rematch of last year’s championship game, which the Trojans won on a last-second layup by Jill Hein. Thursday’s game will begin at 8 p.m.
