Trojans are Classic champions!

The Hillsboro Trojans saved their best basketball for the second half and found a way to beat Smoky Valley, 51-40, in the championship game of the Trojan Classic on Saturday night.

Smoky held the edge throughout most of the first half and built a 25-17 lead by intermission. But Hillsboro began to step up its game in the third quarter and Layne Frick scored five points in the last 56 seconds of the quarter to pull HIllsboro into a 33-33 tie.

Andy Brubacher started the final quarter by banking in a 15-footer off the glass for the Trojans’ first lead since the early moments of the game. Key down the stretch was the Trojan free-throw shooting. Hillsboro knocked down 11 of 12 free throws over the last 4:19 to slowly but surely pull away from the Vikings, who were forced into some quick shots and turnovers by the Hillsboro defense and the shrinking game clock.

Brubacher finished with 13 points — 11 in the final quarter — to lead the Trojans.

With the win, Hillsboro stays unbeaten at 13-0. They will be off next week as the HHS girls begin tournament play at Southeast of Saline.
