With Hillsboro trailing Thomas More Prep 53-52 only seconds left, Tyler Weinbrenner rebounded Layne Frick’s missed 3-pointer and popped in a 10-footer in the layne with 4.5 seconds left to give Hillsboro the lead and ultimately the win Friday night at Brown Gymnasium.
The Trojans managed three more points when TMP drew a technical for calling a timeout when they didn’t have one. Weinbrenner hit one of two free throws, then Andy Brubacher took the inbounds pass and drove for a layup as time ran out for the final 57-53 score.
The Trojans played one of their best quarters of the season to open the game, and led 24-14 at quarter’s end. But HHS managed only one field goal in the second quarter and trailed 30-26 at intermission.
The entire second half was a nip-and-tuck affair before Weinbrenner’s shot finally sealed the win and raised the Trojans’ record to 12-0 for the season. TMP dropped to 8-3.
Hillsboro will play either Smoky Valley or Medicine Lodge Saturday night at 8 p.m.
