The Hillsboro girls’ and boys’ basketball teams swept a pair of games from the Sterling Black Bears Friday night at Brown Gymnasium. The girls won 52-44 while the undefeated boys rolled to an 80-62 victory.

For the Trojan girls, the game was a struggle all night long. Shooting 1-of-11 in the first quarter, the Trojans trailed 6-5 at quarter’s end. A 9-2 run over the last two minutes of the second period pushed HIllsboro into a tentative 22-20 lead at intermission.

Shannon Kroeker’s six points in third quarter helped the Trojans breathe a little easier, 39-33, going into the final period. After Sterling scored six straight to tie the game to open the quarter, Hillsboro put together a 9-0 run reassert themselves and take a 48-39 lead with 2:30 to play.

Kroeker, who led the Trojans with 14 points, was the only Trojan to break double figures. Hillsboro moves to 8-1 and will take on Wellington tomorrow night in a non-league contest.

The boys, meanwhile, raced to 15-0 lead to start the game, then let Sterling crawl back to within eight to 12 points for much of the second quarter. A 27-13 third quarter put the game beyond reach.

Tyler Weinbrenner came back from an off night in his previous outing against Nickerson to score 19 points for the Trojans, who move to 9-0 on the season. Also scoring in double figures were Ross Duerksen with 15, Andy Brubacher with 12 and Adam Woods with 11.

The boys will take on Wellington tomorrow night in a non-league contest.
