Hillsboro sweeps Nickerson Tuesday night

The Trojan girls and boys both got off to slow starts in their games against Nickerson Tuesday night, Jan. 8, in Hillsboro, but both eventually found their legs and posted solid wins.

The girls were victorious, 57-35. With the score knotted at 21 at halftime, Hillsboro put together a 19-point third quarter and led by 12 heading into the final period. That turned out to be the difference in the game.

Jill Hein scored 12 for the Trojans and Shannon Kroeker added 11. With the win, Hillsboro moves to 7-1 on the season and will host Sterling on Friday, then travel to Wellington on Saturday.

The boys, meanwhile, shot 4-of-14 from the field in the first quarter and trailed 15-11 by quarter’s end. But a 29-point second quarter gave the Trojans a 40-24 cushion by intermission. The pace slacked off in the third quarter, but Hillsboro finished strong for a 76-56 final score.

Andy Brubacher broke a long scoring slump with 16 points to pace the Trojans. Layne Frick had his best offensive game in a while with 14, Ross Duerksen added 11 and Adam Woods 10 to help push Hillsboro’s season record to a perfect 8-0.

The boys will play Sterling on Friday and Wellington on Saturday before starting the Trojan Classic as the No. 1 seed Monday night against Inman.
