Trojans slay Dragons in Halstead, Friday

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro girls and boys started their post-holiday schedule with wins over the Halstead Dragons Friday night in Halstead.

The girls’ game was never a contest, as the Trojans clobbered the home team 58-22 in a game that really wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. Halstead scored the first two points of the game, but Hillsboro led 14-5 by the end of the quarter. By halftime the margin had grown to 34-8, and then 46-14 after three quarters.

Shannon Kroeker led all scorers with 15 points, Amber Hefley added 12, including two 3-pointers, and Sara Thiessen added 11, including her first 3-pointer of her varsity career.

With the win, the Trojans move to 6-1 for the season.

The boys’ game, meanwhile, was a combination of cold shooting by Hillsboro, and some tough, physical defense, but the Trojans survived, 38-31.

Hillsboro took an early 4-2 lead, but then Halstead went up and held the lead until Layne Frick hit a pair of free throws with 1:50 left in the second quarter to put Hillsboro ahead, 18-17. Hillsboro never trailed after that, but never led by more than eight points in the second half. The two teams managed only eight points between them in the final quarter.

Tyler Weinbrenner led Hillsboro with 12 points and Adam Woods added nine. With the win, Hillsboro moves to 7-0 on the season.
