One thing was certain Tuesday night at the game between the girls from Goessel and Peabody-Burns. One team wearing blue and white was going to walk away with a win. When all was said and done, it was the Bluebirds who held off a strong Warrior team for a 47-39 win.

Peabody-Burns took the early advantage, holding the Bluebirds to just four points in the first quarter. But in the second quarter, Goessel battled back behind Lindsey Unruh’s eight points to pull within three at halftime, 24-21.

In the third quarter, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run until Goessel’s Tara Goerzen hit a mid-range jumper. The Bluebirds trailed 37-32 at quarter’s end.

In the final period, the Bluebird defense woke up at just the right time, holding the Warriors to only two points. Goerzen dropped in six of her game-high 15 points in the final stanza to give the Bluebirds the win.

Goessel’s Unruh and Melinda Stucky each added 13 points. The Warriors were led by posts Andrea Jones, who had 11 points, and Gretchen Berns, who added 10.

Coming-With the win, Goessel improves its Heart of America League record to 2-2 and their overall record to 5-2. The Warriors are 2-5 in the HOA and 2-6 overall.

After the holiday break, the Bluebirds will resume play on the road against the Remington Broncos, Jan. 4. Peabody-Burns will resume action the same night at home against the Little River Redskins.
