Trojans sweep Collegiate Tuesday night!

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro Trojans basketball teams swept both games against archrival Wichita Collegiate Tuesday night in Hillsboro.

The Trojan girls jumped to an early lead and were never threatened en route to a 50-31 win. Hillsboro led 15-5 after one sparkling quarter, then held the Spartans to one field goal in the second quarter to take a 26-7 lead at intermission.

Shannon Kroeker and Jill Hein each had 12 points for the Trojans, who enter the holiday break with a 5-1 record.

The Trojan boys, meanwhile, jumped to an early 10-3 lead midway through the opening quarter, then allowed Collegiate an 18-1 run through the rest of the first quarter and into the second quarter. Collegiate was leading by 12 points, 25-13, when Hillsboro’s Ross Duerksen managed a traditional three-point play at the 5:53 mark.

That seemed to turn Hillsboro back in a positive direction. The Trojans cut the lead to six by halftime, 37-31, then played brilliantly in the third quarter to take a 54-51 advantage heading into the final frame.

Hillsboro slipped into a semi-funk again with a couple of missed layups and turnovers in the early minutes, but hung on to win the game, 60-59, when the Spartans’ Chris Prebath missed two very make-able shots as time ran out.

Adam Woods played a strong game at post, particularly in the first quarter, when he scored eight of Hillsboro’s first 10 points. Woods finished with a season high 14. Dustin Jost starred off the bench, hitting a couple of critical 3-pointers in the second half and also finished with 14. Tyler Weinbrenner and Ross Duerksen each scored 10.

With the dramatic win, the Trojans move to 6-0 on the season. Collegiate falls to 1-3.
