Hillsboro teams escape Ellinwood Friday

The Hillsboro girls’ and boys’ basketball teams came away with tough wins Friday night at Ellinwood to open MCAA Mid Division play.

The girls started their game with an 0-for-12 shooting funk, but rallied late to lead 10-6 after one quarter. The Trojans never trailed the rest of the way, but also never took command of the contest against the Eagles, who came into the game with an 0-4 record.

The Trojans struggled offensively, and it didn’t help that team leader Jill Hein was under the weather and sat out much of the game.

Shannon Kroeker paced Hillsboro with nine points, Sara Thiessen added seven. With the win, Hillsboro moves to 4-1 on the season.

In the boys’ game, Hillsboro trailed by a point after the first quarter but built a 12-point lead by the end of three quarters. Still, the Eagles came back to within three points late in the game before the Trojans pulled out a 61-56 win.

Tyler Weinbrenner had 19 points for the Trojans, Layne Frick and Ross Duerksen added 12 each. The win pushes the HHS record to 5-0.
