Thin numbers and inexperience proved to be a decisive factor as Marion lost its first two duals of the season Thursday night in Council Grove.
Marion fell to the host team 75-0 and to Chase County in their second dual, 57-12.
“We had seven wrestlers who wrestled tonight,” Warrior coach Chad Adkins said. “Four of the seven were wrestling in their first wrestling matches ever.”
In the first dual, Marion’s Steven Boone and Council Grove’s Daniel Brakenhoff battled it out until Brakenhoff claimed the win with a 13-9 decision.
Boone pinned Chase County’s Matt Dobbs in the second dual for six of the 12 points the Warrior team tallied during the evening.
The other six points were awarded to the Warriors because of a forfeit.
Marion’s Zac Ewert gave Chase County’s Nathan Passmore all he could handle until eventually falling in a 15-7 decision.
“Steven, Chris (Freeby) and Zac were all wrestling up a weight class,” Adkins said. “I hope to have some more kids available the rest of the season. The kids now know where they are at and what they need to work on.”
Coming-The Warriors travel to Haven Thursday for a double dual. Hillsboro, Haven and Halstead are also participating in the quad. Matches begin at 6 p.m.
Marion will travel to Hesston Saturday for the Hesston Invitational Tournament. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
