EDITORIAL: Give and receive

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DON RATZLAFF
It is a heart-warming exercise to report on the many programs in Marion County designed to share Christmas cheer with families and individuals facing challenging financial times. Our reporter’s biggest fear while preparing the story (Page 24) was that someone’s program might be overlooked.

These programs exemplify the proverbial Christmas spirit of sharing and giving. But the hardest part, for many, is the receiving and the taking. Accepting a helping hand can be a humbling experience. We appreciate the efforts of organizers to make it easier to do so by keeping inquiries confidential. Still, it takes courage to admit our need even to those we otherwise trust with our lives and souls.

We who are on the giving end are grateful for the blessing of having resources to share. We on the receiving end can accept assistance with a measure of joy-and resolve, too. Everyone has resources to share with others. Some resources just happen to be of a material nature.
