Nine local EMTs feted for years of volunteer service

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Nine emergency medical technicians from the Hillsboro ambulance crew were recognized for their years of service Nov. 26.

JoAnn Knak and James “Dick” Carr were each feted for 25 years of service, Rod Bolstad and Danita Unrau for 15 years, Kirby Koehn, Wendy McCarty and John Ryding for 10 years, and Amy Richards and Mike Vineski for five years.

EMTs go through nearly eight months of training, meeting twice a week and then passing a state exam. Crew members are then required to recertify with continued training of 28 hours for a two-year license.

Marion County EMTs are paid only $1 per hour for on-call time and $25 for an emergency call.

The Marion County Emergency Medical Service attempts to guard against stress and burnout on its crews by offering stress debriefing exercises after traumatic events.

Marion County has active crews in Hillsboro, Marion, Peabody Tampa and Florence, and First Responder units in Lincolnville, Durham, Burns and Goessel.
