MHS wrestlers to build on last season’s success

With more than 20 wrestlers out for the team this season, Marion coach Chad Adkins is excited about the direction his program is going.

“We’ve got a lot more excitement and interest about it,” Adkins said. “It’s looking good for the future.”

Adkins’ Warriors finished last season with nine wrestlers, including four who qualified for the state wrestling tournament.

“We have a pretty solid team this year,” Adkins said. “A lot of the guys have a chance of making it past regionals this season.”

Sophomore Steven Boone will anchor the Warrior mat attack.

“He is an animal,” Adkins said. “He went to state last year as a freshman, and he has a great chance again this year .”

Boone, at 5-10 and 189-pounds, will drop some weight and wrestle in the 171-pound class.

Adkins said the key to long-term success is getting more kids out.

“The key for us is getting numbers in the room,” Adkins said. “We need numbers so we can have challenge matches and create a competitive atmosphere.

“It’s kind of tough to do that. Beating up on the same guys, well, it got really monotonous last season with nine guys.”

Adkins said the Warriors have a lot of juniors and seniors out this season with little or no experience.

“We have a lot of really green kids who don’t know what they’re doing yet,” he said. “We have some juniors and seniors out whohave never wrestled before. You have to start at the bottom in a new program and with a lot of new faces.”

The interest in Marion wrestling is growing, according to Adkins. The Warriors will look to take advantage of that when they open their season this Thursday at Council Grove.

“We’ve got a couple of good ones wrestling this year,” Adkins said. “The most exciting thing is that there is a lot of excitement in the community, and we hope to feed off of that excitement.”
