With two returning All-Heart of America league players, head coach Brian Halloway and his Goessel Bluebirds are excited about the 2001-02 season.

Goessel finished their season last year with a 12-13 record overall and 3-10 record in the HOA.

Halloway is entering his sixth season with the Bluebirds and is 66-50 while at Goessel.

Last season the Bluebirds advanced into sub-state play, but subsequently fell to Lebo High School, the eventual 2A state champions.

“These girls lost to the state champs last year in the sub-state finals,” Halloway said. “They made it to state in volleyball and are looking forward to proving themselves in basketball.”

According to Halloway, this year’s team is promising.

Juniors Melinda Stucky and Tara Goerzen will help bolster the Bluebirds’ run this year.

Stucky, a 5-8 forward, returns for the Bluebirds, averaging just under 14 points a game with 13.9 and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Goerzen, a 5-2 guard, also averaged 13.9 points per game and was named a HOA first-teamer after last season.

The Bluebirds begin their basketball journey Friday night when they travel to Little River.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
