The Goessel volleyball team earned a berth in the Class 1A state tournament by defeating Quivera Heights, 15-11, 15-6, and Norwich, 15-13, 15-9.

In game one against the Quivera Heights Thunderbirds, Goessel battled to a 12-7 lead until Quivera Heights was able to close the gap to 13-11 before the Bluebirds finished the Thunderbirds off, 15-11.

Goessel contolled the second game behind Becky Schroeder and Jessica Graber, who served their way to a 15-6 win.

Facing the top-seeded team in the bracket, Tara Goerzen helped the Bluebirds jump to a 5-0 lead. But the lead was quickly narrowed when the Norwich cut the lead to 6-5.

Lindsey Unruh stepped in and stretched Goessel’s lead to five.

Norwich battled back again and actually took the lead 11-12 until Goessel held off the Eagle attack and rallied to win 15-13.

In game two, Goessel again jumped out quickly.

Up by four, the Eagles came soaring back, rattling off five points.

Shannon Schmidt stepped up eventually and scored three, and Goessel never relinquished the lead.

Schmidt came up later in the game and scored five points to help the Bluebirds earn a state tournament berth.

“We are really looking forward to playing at Hays,” head coach Sandy Banman said. “This year the girls are determined to have a better year.”

The Bluebirds are 27-7 on the year.

Goessel is seeded seventh and will play at Hays for their first game of pool play.
