Kansas Wesleyan downs Tabor 41-27

The Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and went on to hand Tabor their first home loss of the season with a 41-27 win.

The Bluejays got on the board early in the second quarter when Dave Hernandez scored from one-yard out. Dylan Pohlman added the PAT and the Jays trailed 14-7.

The Coyotes responded with a TD strike of their own minutes later to extend their lead back to 14.

Tyson Ratzlaff hauled in a 20-yard pass from Hernandez at the eight-minute mark to keep the Bluejays within striking distance. Polhman connect on the point after and Tabor trailed 21-14.

With seconds remaining in the first half, Kansas Wesleyan pounded it in for a two-yard touchdown. They added the PAT and the Coyotes went into the lockerroom at half with a 28-14 lead.

Much like the first half, the Coyotes and Bluejays swapped scoring drives throughout the remainder of the game.

KWU added a 74-yard touchdown bomb to extend its lead to 35-14 after the extra point.

Tabor’s Steven Seaman took the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a TC touchdown. Pohlman’s kick was blocked and the Bluejays trailed 35-21.

In the fourth quarter, Ratzlaff took a Hernandez pass 15 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to a touchdown. But KWU added a nine-yard touchdown at the 5:57 mark to seal the win, 41-27.

Hernandez finished 18-for-45 for 272 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Ratzlaff caught 10 passes for 170 yards.

Kyle Holzheuser spearheaded the defense with eight tackles and one fumble recovery.

The Bluejays (3-4) will travel to Leavenworth next Saturday to take on St. Marys College.
