The Hillsboro Trojans sprinted to a 23-0 lead half way through the first quarter, then overcame a bushel of mistakes to beat Herington, 36-9, Friday, Oct. 12, at Herington to go 1-0 in district play.

The Trojans took the opening kickoff and scored six plays later when Alan Yoder ran the ball in from three yards out. The 2-point conversion pass from Dustin Jost to Adam Woods made the score 8-0 with 9:47 to play.

After Herington lost a fumble on their second play from scrimmage, Jost scored from seven yards out on a QB keeper and Ross Duerksen ran in the 2-point conversion for a 16-0 lead with 6:44 left in the quarter.

The Railers then went three-and-out on their next possession and Yoder returned their punt 68 yards for a score. James Bina kicked the extra point and it was 23-0 with 5:39 still to play.

Then the problems began for the Trojan offensive team. On the next possession, Jost was picked off by Herington’s Matt Otte, who ran the ball back for Herington’s only touchdown of the night.

Before the game was over, Hillsboro had fumbled the ball six times and lost three of them, had a long snap sail over the head of the punter, and had one touchdown run called back on a penalty.

Even so, Hillsboro scored two more touchdowns in the game. The first one came right before halftime when the Trojans capitalized on a Herington fumble and scored on a six-yard pass from Jost to Yoder with no time left on the clock. Bina’s PAT made the score 30-0 at intermission.

Jost added the final touchdown on a 24-yard run with 8:53 left in the game. Bina’s PAT made the score 37-6.

Herington added a 35-yard field goal late to close out the scoring.

While the Trojan offense was up and down, the defense was marvelous all night. They allowed only one yard rushing on 14 carries in the first half and 15 yards passing. Herington didn’t pick up a first down until 31 seconds were left in the third quarter.

With the win, Hillsboro is 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in district play. The Trojans will play 5-2 Marion next Friday. The Warriors were defeated by Hesston 27-14 in district play Oct. 12.
