Three qualify for AAU national meet in Virginia

Three area youth qualified for the AAU national track meet in Virginia this weekend by placing among the top four in their respective events at the Region 8 meet in Columbia, Mo.


Nathan Vogel, competing in the Sub-Bantam Division, qualified by placing third in the high jump by clearing 3-10. He placed fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:45.


Aaron Yoder qualified in the 2,000-meter steeplechase by placing second in a time of 6:50. He also placed fifth in the 3,000 meters in 10:01, and seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 4:30.


Daniel Yoder qualified in two events. He cleared 11-0 and placed fourth in the pole vault and fourth in the 800 meters in 2:06.


Jacob Yoder also competed in Columbia, placing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13-7. He was in the Sub-Midget Division.


The parents of Vogel and the Yoder brothers indicated Monday their sons would not be competing in the national meet because of the investment of time and finances needed to get there.


The four athletes qualified for the Region 8 meet by finishing among the top four in their respective events at the Missouri Valley AAU meet June 27-28 in Manhattan.


Vogel won the high jump at 3-8 and placed third in the 800 meters in 2:45.42.


Aaron Yoder won the steeplechase in 6:54.20, placed second in the 1,500 in 4:25.97, and second in the 3,000 meters in 9:55.55.


Daniel Yoder tied for third in the pole vault at 11-6 and was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:08.17.


Jacob Yoder placed second in the long jump at 13-111/2.


Also competing at Manhattan were Alan Yoder, who placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.65) and the long jump (19-113/4), and Trista Hanley, who placed fifth in the shot put (31-10).
