A 27-year-old Hillsboro man is being held on $25,000 bond in Marion County Jail after being charged with aggravated assault in the physical abuse of his 41/2-month old child last Tuesday afternoon.

Hillsboro Police Chief Kinning said Matthew L. Jenkins of 415 S. Ash told officers stress caused him to squeeze his infant son until the baby stopped breathing.

According to Kinning, doctors have said the infant’s injuries are more consistent with severe shaking.

Jenkins himself brought the child to the emergency room of Hillsboro Community Medical Center around 3:30 p.m. in serious condition. Kinning said Jenkins was “very distraught and remorseful” about the situation.

The child was transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he was listed in serious condition in the prenatal intensive care unit.

“The first night I called, they gave him a 50-50 chance of living,” Kinning said. “He has improved and he is feeding on his own. He is still having frequent seizures, but he still has two hematomas of the brain. When they’re able to relieve those, that might take care of it.”

Doctors told Kinning it is far too early to know if the incident will leave the child with permanent disabilities.
