LETTERS: Fund for dog draws’remarkable’ support

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN OFFICER JESSEY HIEBERT-K-9 UNIT, HILLSBORO POLICE DEPT.
I am writing this little letter to thank all the many supporters of the Hillsboro K-9 Unit. I received many cards from people all across the state who learned about Otto’s death and our pursuit to get a new police dog.

The donations from businesses and citizens to our memorial fund, which will be used to purchase a new dog, have been remarkable.

The day of Otto’s memorial I received a check from a citizen in the Lincolnville area for $800. The days following we received many other checks, one was for $1,000.

I visited with some students at a Bible school class held June 8 at Marion Elementary School. These students decided they wanted to help us get another dog. During the week, they gave $356 to the K-9 memorial fund. The new dog will cost around $4,000. We are well on the way to paying for him.

We got the first look at our new dog May 12. He is a 3-year-old male German shepherd named Taz. Taz is being trained at a K-9 training academy near Wichita.

Our new dog will have a talent that Otto didn’t. We will now be able to locate people by using our police dog. This will help us find lost children, missing elderly and those who choose to run from law enforcement.

Taz is a large dog, which will enhance his ability to track humans and do other patrol functions such as drug detection. He is a social animal and loves people.

The Hillsboro Police Department will continue to put on drug education lectures which will include dog demonstrations. We are hoping to have the unit up and running within the next few months.

Once again, thanks to all those who have supported me and the K-9 Unit. I look forward to serving the public with my new partner.
