The Durham, Hillsboro Noon and Hillsboro Evening Lions clubs sponsored six Hillsboro High School band students to the Kansas Lions Band Camp in Lindsborg last week.

Angie Claassen, Caleb Dirks, Ryan Funk, Kelly Just, Stephanie King and Mandy Ratzloff joined the 221-member band that performed a concert at Presser Hall at Bethany College Saturday morning, June 2, for the Kansas Lions State Convention. The general public was invited to the event.

Phil Ostrander, director of bands/brass at Bethany College, conducted the Kansas Lions Band. Lion Tom McClernon of Wichita was chairman of the Kansas Lions Band Committee, which sponsored the band. To celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary, a reunion was held prior to Saturday’s concert. All former band members in attendance were recognized at the concert.

Dirks, King and Ratzloff will also play in the International Band at the Lions International Convention in Indianapolis in July. They had several days of practice before the other band members arrived in Lindsborg and will practice again before they leave for Indianapolis. Their director will be Dana Hamant of Wichita East High School, who has directed the International Band for a number of years.
