Hagen wins first league tennis title

Hillsboro High School senior Michael Hagen won the No. 1 singles title at the MCAA league tennis meet in Ellinwood, Monday.

The win marked the first time a Trojan has won an MCAA tournament title of any kind since the league was formed in 1995.

“It was a big win for Michael,” said coach Lonnie Isaac. “He just played real well all day long.”

Hagen won the title with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win over Kevin Sullivan of Wichita Collegiate, who finished third in Class 3A last season.

To get to the championship match, Hagen defeated Ryan Fricke of Ellinwood in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated Steve Claassen of Hesston, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Jared Hefley and Brandon Ratzlaff finished third. They defeated the team of Mason/ Jantz of Hesston 6-3, 6-1, in the first round, then lost to Jost/Handy of Wichita Collegiate in the semifinals, 2-6, 1-6, before beating Watson/ Miller of Haven, 6-2, 6-2.

In No. 2 singles, Hillsboro’s Adam Driggers finished fifth. He lost to Eric Shear of Hesston in the first round, 3-6, 0-6, then beat Brian Smith of Sterling, 9-1, and Ricky Snyder of Haven, 9-4.

In No. 2 doubles, the team of Jordan Woelk and Caleb Dirks lost to Mailloux/Parks of Haven in rthe first round, 3-6, 1-6, then lost to Humphereys/Britton of Sterling 8-9.

As a team, Hillsboro finished in a tie for third with Hesston with 42 points.

Wichita Collegiate won the league title with 64 points and Smoky Valley was second with 50.
