Third write-in joins council race

Vince Driver, a former city council member, has become the third write-in candidate to announce for the open East Ward seat on the Hillsboro City Council.

Last week, Barney McCarty and Matt Hiebert announced their intention to conduct a write-in campaign.

No one filed for the position before the Jan. 23 deadline.

“I had several people ask me if I would (run for the seat) since I had already been on the council one other time,” Driver said.

He served on the council during the 1980s. At the time, the council did not have a city administrator.

“Someone had told me I should file, but I didn’t know if I wanted the hassle,” he said. “Then I talked to some people who were already on (the council), and they said it’s a lot different than it was. Then I thought maybe I decided to see if I could be of any help.”

Driver retired little over a year ago from Circle D Corp., which he helped found around 14 years ago.

“Knowing how the city works and then about business, maybe there’s some ways I can help the city save some money,” he said.
