WEB FLASH: Hillsboro sweeps Collegiate!

Grant Brubacher scored on a driving layup with one second left to give the Hillsboro Trojans a dramatic 43-41 win over archrival Wichita Collegiate Friday night in Brown Gymnasium.

The game was tight from the start. The score was tied at 12 after one quarter and at 17 at halftime before Hillsboro edged in front 31-30 after three quarters when Ross Duerksen hit a 10 footer in the lane with two seconds to go.

Collegiate came back on the scoring of Brett Sweeney to take a 39-35 lead with 3:09 to play in the game. Brubacher retaliated with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2:32 to play, then Jeremy Loewen hit one from the same spot with 1:05 left to put Hillsboro ahead by two points. Peter Onderick from Collegiate came back with a bucket in the lane with 37.4 seconds left to tie the game at 41.

HHS called a timeout with 26.6 seconds to go and set up the play for Brubacher who drove hard, sliced between two defenders and laid the ball cleanly through. Collegiate was given a timeout with one second left on the clock but could not convert the long pass down the court.

Brubacher finished with 12 points and Loewen seven to pace HHS, which moved to 9-5 on the season and 2-3 in Mid Division play.

The HHS girls meanwhile, breezed past Collegiate 53-20, even though they didn’t shoot particularly well. Collegiate was without the services of their primary scorer, Hannah Houlik, who was out with an ankle injury. Without her, the Spartans were undersized and had little firepower to use against Hillsboro.

Hillsboro led 10-5, 18-7 and 36-10 at the quarter stops.

Shannon Kroeker and Angela Herzet each had 13 points to lead Hillsboro, which moves to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in Mid Division play.
