HMS Trojan teams battle Lyons and Lindsborg

The Hillsboro Middle School boys’ and girls teams had a full week with league games against Lyons and Lindsborg and a weekend tournament for seventh-grade boys.

Lyons-Derek Hamm’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave the HMS eighth-grade team a dramatic 36-34 win over Lyons Monday night.


“The guys put themselves in position to win the game and took advantage of it,” said coach Shawn Winter.


Hamm finished with 11 points for the Trojans (5-6). Sammy Espada added 10, Daniel Deckert six, Eric Weinbrenner five, and Tyler Goldsby and Lee Sorensen two each.


The seventh-grade team lost 48-30. Chad Hughbanks scored seven for the Trojans (7-4). Also scoring were Kyle Kroeker with six, Adam Scheele and Macy Fadenrecht with four each, Josh Jost three, and Tim Funk, Josh Boese and Josh Jost with two each.


The mixed team won, 28-27. David Funk scored six, Peter Fast three and Michael Schaffers, Andrew Bina, John Vineski, Neil Ollenburger, Kurtis Shaw, Wade Weibert and Josh Boese all scored two.


Lindsborg-The eighth-grade team beat Lindsborg 51-34 on Thursday.


“The eighth-grade team played the most talented team in the league and were down 25 points at the half,” coach Shawn Winter said. “The guys played hard the second half and outscored Lindsborg 27-20.”


The seventh-grade team won their game 24-22. Kyle Kroeker led the team with eight points, Tim Funk and Macy Fadenrecht score four, and Chad Hughbanks, Clinton Schneider, Robert Jost and Adam Scheele each scored two.


The mixed team lost 39-12. Andrew Bina, John Vineski and Kurtis Shaw each scored four points for HMS.


7th grade tourney-The seventh-grade team played its tournament in Hesston on Saturday and finished second.


HMS defeated Hesston 38-31 in the first game and almost hit a shot at the buzzer in the championship game against Lindsborg, but lost by two, 27-29.

The Hillsboro Middle School girls team were swept by Lyons on Monday night and by Lindsborg on Thursday.


Lyons-The eighth-grade team lost on their home court to Lyons, 30-14. Emily Ratzlaff scored five points to lead the Trojans (5-6). Charity Davis added three points and Amy Duerksen, Emily Railsback and Niki Streeter each scored two.


The seventh-grade team lost 28-18. Laura Skiles score seven for HMS (1-10).


Also scoring were Kelsi Slayden with six, Courtney Foth three and Laura Lindsay two.


The mixed team lost 30-1. Rose Vineski score the Trojans’ lone point.


Lindsborg-The HMS eighth-grade pushed their game with Lindsborg into overtime before losing 29-23.


Emily Ratzlaff’s 3-pointer from the corner with five seconds to play tied the game at regulation, 23-23. The Trojans, though, were unable to score against the home team during overtime.


“We had trouble making good passes and good decisions in overtime, which cost us the game,” coach Taryn Jost said.


Amy Duerksen scored five of her team-high 12 points and Ratzlaff scored seven of her 10 points in the final quarter.


Charity Davis added one point for HMS (5-5).


Even though the seventh-grade team played one of its best games fundamentally, they couldn’t compete against Lindsborg’s size and lost 31-11.


Laura Skiles scored six points for HMS (1-8), Laura Lindsay four and Courtney Foth one.


The mixed team lost 42-8. Jessica Vannocker scored six points for HMS and Stephanie Loewen contributed the other two points.


Coming-HMS will close its regular season Feb. 1 against Sterling. The girls will play in Hillsboro and the boys at Sterling. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.


The following week, the eighth-grade teams will compete in their league tournament with games schedule for Monday, Thursday and Saturday (Feb. 5, 8, 10) in Lindsborg.


Pairings and times will be announced closer to the event.
