AREA PREPS HOOP ROUNDUP: Peabody-Burns misses Burrton tourney title by one point

Area boys’ teams joined teams across the state that participated in tournaments last week.


Peabody-Burns was at Burrton, Goessel accepted an invitation at Canton-Galva, Marion was at the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro, and the Centre boys and girls participated in the Eisenhower League tournament at Junction City.


Peabody-Burns-A tough third quarter by Peabody-Burns enabled the host team Burrton to crawl back into the championship game and eventually win the title, 60-59, in overtime.


The Warriors led at the half 34-28, but the Chargers outscored Peabody-Burns 22-8 in the third period to pull ahead by eight points heading into the final period.


Peabody rallied to tie the game at 54-54 at the end of regulation.


Steve Morgan led the Warriors (9-3) with 18 points and Jeremy Sheffler added 14.


The Warriors got to the finals by routing Central Christian 79-44 in the first round and beating Fairfield 56-49 in the semifinals.


Canton-Galva-Alex Westbrook scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Eagles past Douglass, 58-42, to take third place at the invitational tournament they hosted last week.


Canton-Galva established a 13-9 lead after one quarter and never trailed. Shelby Hoppes added 14 points and Aaron Bundy 11 to pace the Eagles (5-8).


Canton-Galva won their opening game of the tournament, a 58-34 decision over Wichita Independent, then lost in the semifinals to Sedgwick, 58-50.


Goessel-Jeremy Voth exploded for 28 points to lead the Bluebirds past Wichita Independent, 71-43, to capture third place at the Canton-Galva Invitational last week.


The Bluebirds outscored the Panthers in every quarter en route to the easy win. Luke Lehrman added 17 points to the cause.


“We really needed a game like this,” said coach Justin Coup after snapping a three-game losing streak.


Goessel lost their first two games in the tournament: 68-62 to Douglass in the first round on Tuesday, and 55-50 to Ell-Saline on Thursday.


Marion-Jamey Cooper scored 19 points to lead Marion past Belle Plaine, 63-52, for seventh-place at the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro.


The Warriors (8-5) led 16-9 after one quarter and were never seriously threatened. Heath Tajchman added 15 points and Robert Verbic scored 12.


The Warriors lost their first round game to Hillsboro, 63-37, then lost to Sunrise Academy, 65-61, in their next game to find themselves playing for seventh against Belle Plaine.


Centre-Renee Ecklund and Stephanie Hajek combined for 26 points as the Cougar girls beat St. Xavier, 57-39, to take place in the Eisenhower League girls’ tournament last week.


The Cougars jumped to an 18-11 lead after one quarter, but then blew the game open with a 22-6 third quarter.


Ecklund finished with 15 points and Hajek 15 for Centre (9-4).


The Centre boys finished fifth on the boys’ side of the tournament with 48-46 squeaker over St. Xavier.


Centre (8-5) lost its opener to Hope, 66-64, then beat St. John’s Military, 83-64, in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
