WEB FLASH: Trojans are Classic champions!

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro Trojans played perhaps their best all-round game of the season Saturday night — and needed it to beat Thomas Moore Prep, 49-48, in the championship game of the 2001 Trojan Classic basketball tournament.

Hillsboro played focused and aggressive defense all night against the bigger, stronger Monarchs from Hays. The Trojans led 15-14 after one quarter, then pushed the lead 24-19 on a bucket by Michael Hagen with 3:16 to play until halftime. But TMP scored the last six points and led 25-24 at intermission.

The lead went back and forth early in the third quarter until Grant Brubacher’s bucket with 3:35 to go put HHS ahead for good, 30-29. The Trojans stretched that lead to 37-31 by the end of the quarter, then to their largest margin of the night, 45-37, when Hagen scored again with 3:45 left in the final period.

TMP made one last run and pulled to within one, 45-44, with 1:46 to play. Hillsboro ran some clock until Grant Brubacher was fouled with 20.8 seconds left and sank both ends of a one-and-one. Layne Frick rebounded a missed Monarch shot, was fouled, then sealed the game by hitting both ends of his one-and-one opportunity with 5.9 seconds left to make the score 49-44. TMP hit a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final two-point margin.

Brubacher led Hillsboro with 17 points, Loewen had 10. With the win, HHS moves to 7-5 for the season.
