WEB FLASH: Trojans sweep Nickerson Tuesday night

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro High School girls’ and boys’ teams beat Nickerson Tuesday night on the road. The girls won 46-45 and the boys prevailed 60-47.

The girls (8-1) got off to a horrible start, hitting only one field goal in 26 attempts in the first half. They managed only two free throws in the first quarter to trail 12-2 and didn’t get a field goal until Jenna Jost hit a 10-footer with 2:11 to play before intermission. Nickerson led 22-9 at the break.

But the Trojans came out strong in the third quarter and, fueled by a much more aggressive defensive attack, opened the floodgates for a 20-0 turnaround and a 29-20 lead by the time the buzzer sounded.

The two teams played about even in the final quarter as the Trojans nailed down the win.

Meanwhile, Grant Brubacher and Jeremy Loewen each scored 20 points as the Trojans pulled out of the doldroms and beat the host team convincingly, 60-47. HHS led 15-8 after one period, then stretched the margin to 13, 30-17, by halftime.

The Trojans’ biggest lead of the night came when Brubacher drove the lane and hit the layup to give his team a 38-19 advantage. The Panthers got as close as eight points, 45-37 with 5:36 left in the final period, but Hillsboro stepped up its defense and widened the margin until the final buzzer.

With the win, Hillsboro evens its season record at 4-4.
