Partly Nonsense

Last week’s edition of the Free Press reported that every household can get rid of up to 100 tires through a waste-tire collection event in our county.

Maybe the person(s) who dumped old tires just south of town on Indigo Road could pick them up and take them to the Marion County Road and Bridge site south of Marion on a Tuesday or Saturday between Jan. 9 and Feb. 3.

My mutual funds, along with nearly everyone else’s, lost somewhere around 40 percent of their value in 2000. Who gets the credit or blame for this?

I thought we were told all year the economy had never been better.

Folks in Hillsboro have a rare situation for Kansas-or in the United States for that matter. They can choose between two newspapers for news and advertising.

Some people think there is no place for competition in the newspaper business and would rather things stayed the way they have been for the past 90 years.

We are thankful the free enterprise system is alive and well in America. Everyone has the right to hang out a shingle and see if they can make a new business go. It is what makes our economy tick and provides new jobs, too.

Our philosophy has been that the old ways don’t necessarily meet today’s needs. This is why we at the Free Press choose to play the numbers game and mail a free copy of our newspaper to nearly 7,000 households every week. We are positive our wide distribution has served our advertisers well.

The only real complaint we hear is that some folks don’t like having to choose between two options. It is really no different than buying anything else where two options exist. You buy the one that best meets your needs for the money.

Here’s an analogy think about: Would you want to pay $5 for one gallon of gas or $7 for seven gallons? That’s roughly the situation when you compare the advertising display inch rate and the 1,000 or so papers you’d get in the trade area, versus our inch rate and about 7,000 papers in the trade area.

We don’t want anyone doing business with us just to make us happy.

We want you to be happy doing business with us because you get the most bang for your buck.
