The Hillsboro Middle School eighth-grade girls’ team was the only HMS team to find a way to beat Haven in games played Thursday. The girls played in Haven and the boys in Hillsboro.
Girls-A 9-0 run in the second half gave the HMS eighth-grade girls just enough points to escape with a 22-21 win over the Haven Bobcats on the road.
Trailing 15-13 midway through the third quarter, the Trojans got a bucket from Amy Duerksen and two from Emily Ratzlaff to go up 19-15 at the break.
Charity Davis added three points early in the fourth quarter to complete the run and give the Trojans (4-1) a seven-point cushion, 22-15.
HMS missed three one-and one opportunities down the stretch but held on for the win.
“It was their defense that won the game,” said coach Taryn Jost. “They played as a team and stayed focused, even when it was close.
“Overall, I was very proud of them,” she added. “This was a great game to end on before Christmas vacation.”
Davis led the team with 10 points, followed by Ratzlaff with eight and Duerksen four.
Meanwhile, the HMS seventh-grade team lost to the host team, 36-12, to go 1-4 on the season.
Laura Skiles was the top scorer with five points, followed by Laura Lindsay with four and Courtney Foth with three.
“The seventh-graders struggled offensively, but did a good job of adjusting defensively,” Jost said. “They continue to work hard despite our lack of size.”
The mixed team lost 10-3 in a two-quarter game. Kirsten Cederberg scored two points and Crystal Strotkamp one.
Boys-The eighth-grade boys put on a strong fourth-quarter rally but lost a heartbreaker to Haven at home, 40-39.

“Our teams competed very well against Haven,” said coach Shawn Winter. “We gave ourselves a chance to win both ball games and came up a little short.
“This was a good test to determine where our kids are halfway through the season,” he added. “Haven was very big and well coached, and our boys gave them everything they could handle and then some.”
The HMS mixed team lost 57-17. Josh Funk score four, Andrew Bina three, David Funk, Wade Wiebert, Michael Roble and Trevor Heuson two each, and Kurtis Shaw one.
