Centre FFA in second place at contest

The Centre High School Future Farmers of America placed second as a team at the FFA South Central District Speech Contest, Saturday, Dec. 2, at Cowley County Community College.


About 100 students representing 13 schools participated in the contest that measured students ability to write and present speeches dealing with agricultural topics.


Centre sent 11 students. Brandon Barr, student teacher, and Mary Jirak, parent, accompanied the team.


The contest had five different competition areas divided up into age group and a separate extemporaneous group.


Raschelle Jirak and Laura Klenda placed third and fourth in the freshman division while Joe Forseberg, Andrea Carlson and Aaron Barney also competed in the freshman division.


Cecilia Rziha, Derek Belton, and Kristin Mueller placed fifth, sixth, and ninth in the sophomore division.


Natalie Carlson placed fifth in the junior division.


Maria Jirak placed first in the senior division, and Jenna Tajchman placed fourth in the extemporaneous contest.


Jirak and Tajchman will be competing at the state FFA Speech Contest later this year.
