ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both came away victorious Friday night against Ellinwood, but the teams took different routes to get there.

The Trojan girls had their hands full most of the night before finally establishing some breathing room in the fourth quarter and beating the Eagles 44-34.

Hillsboro trailed 10-7 after one quarter and pulled into a 15-15 tie by halftime. The Trojans sank only five field goals in 21 attempts through the first two quarters.

Led by Angela Herzet’s seven points, the Trojans came out stronger in the third quarter and pulled ahead 30-25 by quarter’s end.

Shannon Kroeker brought Hillsboro home, scoring 10 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth and final period. Herzet finished with 15 points for the night as the girls move to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Mid Division.

The boys, meanwhile, held Ellinwood to single digits unitl the 3:50 mark in the third quarter and coasted to a 52-30 win. Aided by some generous calls from the officials, the Eagles managed almost as many points in the final period (14) as they had the previous three quarters (16).

Hillsboro got balanced scoring on this night. Grant Brubacher and Tyler Weinbrenner each scored 11 points and Layne Frick added 10 to lead the way.

With the win, Hillsboro moves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mid Division of the MCAA.
