The Hillsboro Middle School eighth-grade boys’ and girls’ team prevailed in games against North Reno, Thursday. The HMS seventh-grade teams lost.

BOYS-The eighth-grade boys jumped to an 11-0 lead after one quarter and 22-7 at halftime on the way to an easy 37-18 win in Hillsboro.

Eric Weinbrenner and Derek Hamm each scored 10 points for HMS (1-1). Tyler Goldsby added eight points, Daniel Deckert seven and Lee Sorensen two to round out the scoring.

“We have a group of very unselfish players, which allows for a total team effort,” said coach Shawn Winter. “We have a team that is not concerned about individual statistics, and that makes them very easy to coach.”

The HMS seventh-graders, meanwhile, lost 35-28. Tim Funk and Macy Fadenrecht each scored nine points to lead the Trojans (0-2). Kyle Kroeker added eight points and Chad Hughbanks two.

“The seventh-grade is still learning how to compete as a group,” Winter said. “We didn’t guard the basketball well against North Reno, and we didn’t execute offensively like we were capable of.”

The HMS mixed team won 37-16. Adam Scheele scored seven points, Wade Wiebert six, Josh Funk five, John Vineski and Ben Schaffer and Andrew Bina four each, Peter Fast three and Richard Johnson and Shawn Nelson two.

GIRLS-The HMS eighth-grade girls’ basketball team shutout North Reno for almost three full quarters on the way to a 31-11 win Thursday night in Hutchinson.

The starters jumped to a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter before coach Taryn Jost began substituting. The score was 18-0 at halftime and 21-0 before North Reno finally scored.

“The eighth-grade girls played a great game with everyone contributing,” Jost said.

Emily Ratzlaff scored eight points to lead HMS (1-1). Charity Davis added six, Emily Railsback five, Amy Duerksen four and Sara Hamm, Niki Streeter, Whitney Washmon and Marissa Diener each scored two.

The HMS seventh-grade team, facing a taller North Reno squad, lost 38-12. Laura Skiles scored five points for HMS (0-2), Danielle Hagen, Jenny Terrell and Laura Lindsay each scored two and Katelin Unruh added one.

In the C-team game, the two schools played to a 6-6 tie. Stephanie Loewen scored four points and Kiersten Cederberg scored two.

COMING-The HMS teams will play Nickerson on Thursday. The girls will play in the middle school gym and the boys will play in Nickerson. Seventh-grade games begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade and mixed teams.
